AP English Language and Composition study tips

  • Each essay is scored 0–6 on thesis (1), evidence and commentary (4) and sophistication (1). Your thesis should make a claim, and a plain restatement of the prompt earns no point.
  • For the synthesis essay, cite at least 3 of the 6 sources and put the sources in conversation with your own argument instead of summarizing them in order.
  • In rhetorical analysis, name a choice and its effect ("the repeated short sentences create urgency"), not a device list.
  • The essays are 55% of the score: plan for roughly 40 minutes each and do not exceed the time on the first one.
