How the concordance works

ACT and College Board studied students who took both tests (about the class of 2017) and matched scores that sit at the same rank. Table A1 maps each SAT total (590–1600) to an ACT composite; Table A2 maps each ACT composite (9–36) to a single SAT total plus a range. Use the single score when comparing one number, and the range when you want a sense of the spread.

Does it still apply? The ACT changed in 2025

The ACT was shortened and the composite is now the average of English, Math and Reading, with Science optional. ACT's own research (Interpreting Scores on the Enhanced ACT) says the 2018 concordance can continue to be used, but that an updated concordance needs data from students who took both the enhanced ACT and the digital SAT. We found no newer official concordance as of October 2026, and the 2018 tables also predate the digital SAT. Treat results as a good guide, not a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 1200 SAT in ACT?

Under the 2018 ACT/SAT concordance, a 1200 SAT total corresponds to an ACT composite of 25.

What is a 30 ACT in SAT?

A 30 ACT composite corresponds to a 1370 SAT total, with a range of 1360–1380 in the official table.

Is the concordance exact?

No. It links scores that rank students similarly, based on students who took both tests. Colleges use it to compare, but a single test day can differ. The official table gives SAT ranges for each ACT composite for this reason.

Does the concordance apply to the digital SAT and enhanced ACT?

The 2018 tables were built from paper-era data. ACT's June 2025 research concludes the 2018 concordance can continue to be used with the enhanced ACT and says an update would require data from students who took both the enhanced ACT and the digital SAT. We found no newer official concordance as of October 2026.

Which should I take, SAT or ACT?

Take a full practice test of each and compare the concorded results. If they are within a few points, pick the format you find less stressful: the SAT is adaptive and has shorter reading passages, while the ACT is now English, Math and Reading with an optional Science section.
