How to find your exact deadline

  1. Find your state above (or in the picker) and note any date or “as soon as possible” wording.
  2. Check the FAFSA deadlines page on StudentAid.gov for any updates since the form was printed.
  3. Look up each college's FAFSA priority date on its financial aid page. It can be earlier than your state's.
  4. If your state says “More forms may be required,” check your state higher education agency for any extra application.
  5. File by the earliest of those dates. The FAFSA is free to submit at StudentAid.gov.

What makes this page different

  • Every state entry is quoted word for word from the official 2027–28 form, with the source and the date we checked.
  • No guessed dates: where a state says “as soon as possible after Oct. 1, 2026,” we say exactly that.
  • A live count of days left until the federal deadline.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 2027–28 FAFSA deadline?

The federal deadline is June 30, 2028. The official 2027–28 FAFSA form says: “We must receive your application no later than June 30, 2028.” State and college aid deadlines are often much earlier, so the federal date is the last possible day, not the best day to file.

What does “as soon as possible after Oct. 1, 2026” mean?

It means the state has no single cutoff date, and in many of those states aid is given out while funds last (“Awards made while funds exist”). 14 of the 59 states and territories on the official list use that wording for at least one program. Filing early gives you the best chance.

Which school year does the 2027–28 FAFSA cover?

The 2027–28 FAFSA is for college terms between July 1, 2027 and June 30, 2028. It uses 2025 tax information.

My state says “Check with your financial aid office.” What do I do?

That state did not list one statewide date on the official form. Ask the financial aid office at each college you are applying to for its FAFSA priority date, and check your state higher education agency’s website for state grant deadlines.
